today i played sonic the hedgehog 3 for the first time on a console in probably about a decade. my overwhelming inability to beat the final boss on launch base zone made me realize that i may never regain my middle school video game prowess.

I have Sonic Mega Collection for the GameCube, but I prefer to play on my vintage cartridges and my hella-old Genesis (but it's nice to know that when my cartridges permanently go bad, I have the games in another format). I still have my old saves intact, which have the game beaten with every single character and every single Chaos Emerald for the Sonic 3/Sonic & Knuckles lock-on awesomeness. A year or so ago I started a new file, and beating all those 3D bonus stages damn near killed me.
i found the sonic 3 3d bonus stages not too bad. i would usually nab all the chaos emeralds by the casino level. the sonic and knuckles ones on the other hand... i don't want to talk about them.
